The Chairmen

Prior to a branch 8 luncheon, various activity chairmen make themselves available to explain and answer questions (or not). This section is an acknowledgement of the extra effort they expend to make their activities successful.

Digital Photography:

The Digital Photography activity is composed of many talented photographers who “just want to be taken seriously.” For some of the most creative and unique compositions, you won’t do better than to attend a meeting. Chairman Bill is professional with a wonderful sense of humor. As a matter of fact, the following is an image of Chairman Bill being professional with a wonderful sense of humor.

Meetings are held at the homes of the various participants and the host carries the responsibility of presenting the submitted works of art. Below is a host warming up to prepare for what he hopes will be a seamless presentation.

Fishing:

(not to be confused with Phishing)

fish chairman

Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. A popular activity! Don’t miss the boat and be left behind on the dock. Oh, won’t bite, huh? Won’t take the bait? Well, look again. As you can see, the organizer is “totally immersed” in making the activity fun and a success.

Travel:

Travel means something different to each traveler; Skiing in the Alps, cruising on a 2500 passenger ship, snorkeling in the waters of Kauai watching incredibly beautiful fish swim in and out of the coral, going to Walmart (see Sitting), backpacking in the Sierras…

Golf:

Golf, of course, is the “hands-down” most popular & important activity; that along with the weather. Golf is a club & ball sport in which players use specially designed clubs to clobber little white balls into a series of humdrum holes on a curvy course in as few strokes as possible without crying!

More Golf:

Golfers can be very frustrated by the game and become fixated on what it takes to win. For instance, one golfer came running over to inform the next foursome that he was so frustrated he beat his opponent to death with his golf club, and all anyone wanted to know was home many strokes it took!

Our Bocce Chairman:

As shown here, not only is Bocce fun, but our Bocce Chairman makes it fun.

Here he is enjoying a fun moment with one of the better, more sophisticated and talented bocce players. By the end of a strenuous bocce season, surviving the days of hot heat and missing cassino after cassino*, a relaxing time is welcome.
*A “cassino” occurs when all of your balls are closer to the palino than your opponents’ in any given round. Further explanation can be found in the bocce guide

These are two photos that I took at our end-of-season Bocce Bash. Bob asked for copies to add to the luncheon slide shows and I was somewhat reticent to give him this image because of the obvious anomaly; but one motto of mine is “Anything for a Laugh.” So, Bob asked for copies of this photo (right), but he never asked me: “How come, Rick, you took this picture and you’re in it?? How can this be?”

Poker:

Is poker a worthwhile activity? You bet! As mentioned in the sidebar, poker can take on different forms to keep it interesting. The Chairman is aware of the fact that some members might be new to poker, so he holds sample sessions for those of us who have not played at all or in long time.

The unique feature of poker is betting. Poker originated in the early or mid-18th century. Mississippi river boats, on which gambling was a common pastime, featured poker which subsequently spread throughout the Mississippi River region by 1800 and to the West during the gold rush.Poker was played in a variety of forms, with 52 cards,
and included variants. The flush was introduced followed by the draw prior to 1850. During the American Civil War, additions were made including stud poker (the five-card variant), and the straight. Then the wild card (around 1875), lowball and split-pot poker (around 1900), and community poker games (around 1925).

Poker’s popularity experienced an unprecedented spike at the beginning of the 21st century in Walnut Creek, California with its adoption as an activity by SIR Branch 8.

(of course it was coincidental that poker became available on the Internet at that time)

Pickle Ball:

Always looking for new way to retire, I came across a different and unusual activity: “Pickle Ball.” It’s the latest rage, but when you pound or pelt a pickle with a paddle for all practical purposes you get a profoundly pulverized and pervasively permeated pickle!
